During a Parents Without Partners meeting in 1988, he met the love of his life, Kathy Burnight. They married on September 30, 1989.

Stephen will be remembered for his love of gardening, especially his irises and tiger lilies, and becoming a Master Gardener, wrestling in the school wrestling team in high school and college, cheering for the Green Bay Packers and Iowa State Cyclones, and his love of his grandchildren.
