Scyler Douglas Cherry

August 2, 1949 – May 8, 2025


Scyler Cherry, beloved husband, father, grandpa, uncle, and brother went to heaven on May 8, 2025. He was born on August 2, 1949, in Des Moines to Edward & Coralie Cherry.


Scyler grew up the oldest of seven children.  He attended Lincoln High School and graduated from Simpson College where he played both baseball and football. Upon graduation, he joined the Army reserve. Scyler married Joan Haaf on July 27, 1974. Scyler worked for Pittsburgh Des Moines Steel and then worked for M.D. Eggers Construction building and remodeling homes until his retirement.


Scyler loved watching sports, hunting and watching his grandchildren play sports or doing just about anything! Most of all, he enjoyed time with his family!


Scyler is survived by his son Brian (Amanda) Cherry, grandsons John and Tyler, and his daughter Kristen (Michael Murillo) Cherry, granddaughters Lauren and Leia. Sisters, Marcia (Bernie) Heilicser, Sheila (Steve) Van Wyk, Lisa Oja, brothers Craig Cherry, Aaron (Jen) Cherry and sister-in law Julie Cherry. Joan’s sisters, Sandra Edlund, Debbie (Michael) Beall, Jackie (Michael) Peebler, Cathy (Jeff) Nelson, Lynn (Chris) Olds, Dawn (Steve) Myers. He also had many nieces and nephews.


Scyler was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, his parents Edward and Coralie Cherry, John and Majorie Haaf, his brothers Kent, his brother-in-law Gary Oja, brother-in-law Ked Edlund and sister-in-law Marsha Schultz.


A Celebration of Life and Luncheon will be held at Sunset Memorial Chapel (7601 Fleur Drive, Des Moines, IA 50321) on Saturday, May 17th from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. All are welcome to come enjoy a meal and share stories of Scyler.
