October 13, 1938 – May 8, 2025
Leland D. Anderson, 86, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025, at Methodist UnityPoint Hospital. Born on October 13, 1938, in Oklee, Minnesota, to Alfred and Ella Anderson, Lee lived a life marked by service, dedication, and the joy of simple pleasures.
He spent his early years in northern Minnesota, where he left school early to help on the family farm — a testament to his strong work ethic and commitment to family. In 1954, the Anderson family relocated to Duluth, and in 1956, Lee answered the call to serve his country by joining the Air National Guard. He served honorably for 10 years, receiving his discharge in 1966.
Lee then embarked on a long and proud career as an over-the-road truck driver, working with companies such as Skelly, Stone Container, and ADM. He was known for his steady presence, good humor, and a deep love for the open road.
On September 2, 2002, Lee married the love of his life, Glee Ann, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple enjoyed their retirement together wintering in Donna, Texas, embracing life with enthusiasm and heart. Lee had a zest for fun and camaraderie — he loved cruising in his cherished 1991 C4 Corvette, attending music jams and dances, playing bingo, and relaxing on his deck. He was never happier than when sharing coffee and conversation with friends, solving the world’s problems one cup at a time. A man of faith, Lee also cherished his time with the Radiant Church community.
Lee is survived by his sons Todd (Emily) Anderson of Mason City, IA; Troy (Moni) Anderson of Germany; John (Laura) Salmi of Hudson, WI; Al Nesbitt of Seattle, WA; stepsons Dan (Rachel) Waddle of Des Moines, IA; and Kenny Waddle of Altoona, IA. He was a proud grandfather to several grandchildren, each of whom brought joy to his life and sister Geri (Bob Ghiselin) Reno of Costa Mesa, CA. Â
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Glee Ann; his parents, Alfred, and Ella Anderson; brothers Darwin and Raymond; and sisters Alpha and Donna.
Lee will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of kindness, resilience, and love of life will live on in those he touched.
