Larry Lee Thompson, 83, went home to our Lord on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at MercyOne hospital, surrounded by family, after having complications from COPD and Emphysema.
Larry was born on October 10, 1940, at Mercy hospital in Des Moines, Iowa to Vergil Eldon Thompson and Mildred Marion (Polen) Thompson. He was the youngest of three sons. He attended Lincoln High School. In his early years he delivered milk and drove a forklift at the Iowa Liquor Commission Warehouse. Later, settling into a custodial position starting with the Polk County Court House, then finishing his career working many years as a Lead Custodian for the Des Moines Public Schools.
Larry was a loving son, brother, uncle, father & grandfather. He was always making his family laugh and bringing smiles to their faces. He enjoyed camping and fishing; he liked catching bullheads. One of his favorite pass times was watching professional wrestling with his children and grandchildren. Larry liked to have fun, always joking and being the life of the party. He was a lover of all things Elvis and certainly could sing and shake that leg! Back in the day you might find him at “Park Avenue Pub” or “All In the Family” having a few drinks and dancing and if not there he might be at home listening to oldies and letting loose with friends.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Tom & Jim Thompson, and stepdaughter Joyce Kirkpatrick, along with two nieces Jamie Poe & Kelly Rush, and two nephews Tommy & Jimmy Thompson. He is survived by his four children, Angie (Travis) Long of Omaha, Vickie Thompson of Des Moines, Larry (Melissa) Thompson of Des Moines, and David (Rashell) Thompson of Ankeny. Also surviving are six grandchildren of Des Moines, Todd Allen, Kayla Allen (Brandon), Alle Thompson, Jordan Thompson, Rylee Mott, and Gage Thompson, five grandchildren of Omaha, Lee (Jen) Weis, Scott (Nikki) Weis, Trent (Ashley) Weis, Travis (Hope) Weis, and Tara Thompson along with two step grandchildren Toni Cunningham of New Virginia and James Kirkpatrick of Winterset. He also had thirty-one great grandchildren, as well as two nieces and many great nieces & nephews and their families.
Memorial gifts will be allocated toward funeral expenses.
Family will greet friends on Wednesday June 26, 2024, from 11 to 1pm at Sunset Memorial Chapel; 7601 fleur Dr. Des Moines, IA 50321. Funeral services to immediately follow.
