A Celebration Of Life will be held at Celebration Church, 6204 SW 9th St., Des Moines, Iowa on Tuesday, August 12, 2025 from 6:30 pm – 8 pm.
Judy Lamphear, born on January 11, 1945, in Sioux City, Iowa, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2025, at EveryStep Hospice Kavanagh House, surrounded by her loving family.
Judy was a woman of deep faith and love. She found a second family in her church community at Celebration Church, where she drew strength and joy. A proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous, Judy courageously celebrated 34 years of sobriety, often sharing her powerful testimony to uplift and encourage others on their own journeys.
Family was everything to Judy. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her visits to her daughter's home, where she cherished moments with the farm horse Sasha, and cuddles with her beloved dog, Tiny, brought her great happiness. Judy had a generous heart—crocheting blankets for others, fostering children who needed a loving home, and always offering comfort to those who felt alone. Her home and heart were always open.
Judy’s joy came in simple pleasures: birdwatching, vanilla lattes, and the gift of giving. Her laughter, warm hugs, and radiant smile lit up every room she entered. She was a constant presence of love and support, embodying compassion in action.
Judy is survived by her devoted husband, Tom Mattley; her daughter, Mary Hayford; her son, Lenard Russell “Russ” (Kimberly) Hayford Jr.; her grandchildren: Trent (Cate Holec), Josh, Courtney, and Ashleigh; great-grandchildren: Ronnie, Owen, Jackson, Kaylee, Leo, Luka and Vivian sister Jackie Den Beste.
She was preceded in death by her parents Mr. and Mrs. McHugh and daughter Becky Lynn Hayford and her siblings.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Celebration Church or Alcoholics Anonymous, in honor of Judy’s lifelong dedication to faith and recovery.
