Joni Jean Penland, 66, passed away April 3, 2025, at UAMS Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Joni was born on December 4, 1958, in Des Moines, Iowa to Robert and Thelma Penland. She graduated from Lincoln High School before completing beauty school and becoming a hairdresser. She excelled due to her artistic and kind-hearted nature, which eventually led to managerial roles.

After marriage, she gave birth to two boys, who she always described as her pride & joy and light of her life. Never far from family, she treasured her mother and father and dearest “big brothers,” Steve, Jim, and her closest confidant, Larry. She was also the “cool aunt” to many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Creative from a young age, she loved to write and draw and had an affinity for music. She passionately sang along to her favorite musical artists such as the Eagles, Whitney Houston, and her sons. Her gentle spirit provided as much comfort for animals and children as they provided her. Leroy Sprow, her loving partner of twenty years, was her sing-along buddy and primary support.

Along with Leroy, Joni is survived by her sons, Justin and Jarron Atha, brother, Larry Penland, and many nieces and nephews.

At 1:00pm on Friday, May 16, 2025, a Celebration of Life is scheduled at Sunset Memorial Chapel, 7601 Fleur Drive, Des Moines, Iowa, 50321. Inurnment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
