Gilbert "Gib" Richard Calvert

Gilbert (Gib) (Hayseed) Richard Calvert, 75, passed away Saturday, November 12, 2022 at his home in Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 6:00 pm Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at Sunset Memorial Chapel (7601 Fleur Drive, Des Moines).


Gib was born February 26, 1947 in Des Moines to Gilbert E and Ila Ruth (McCombs) Calvert. He grew up in Hamilton, Iowa and graduated from Twin Cedars of Bussey. He served in Vietnam in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was married to Sandy Grubb on December 15, 1973. He worked for Meredith Burda/RR Donnelly for 26 years as a printer. He then worked for Johnson Brothers of Iowa as a truck driver for several years until retiring.


Gib was an avid fan of Minnesota Viking and Iowa State football. He enjoyed bowling, bowhunting, fishing and playing cards with family. He was a jokester and known for bad Dad jokes. Above all he was a loving, devoted and proud husband, father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed by so many.


Gib is survived by his wife Sandy; son, Adam; grandsons, Caleb (girlfriend Jocelyn) and Caiden Calvert and sister, Barbara Jones; brother-in-law Keith Grubb (Phyllis), Gary Grubb (Rosemary) and brother-in-law Mike Grubb (Nancy) and numerous nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ila Calvert, Patricia Burgett, Darline Arnold, Thelma Heckathorn and brothers, Gilbert Aaron Calvert and David Calvert.


In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Animal Rescue League or Food Bank of Iowa.
