Edward Walters

Edward Walters, 76, passed away peacefully in his home July 20, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.


A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, July 26th at 10:30 AM at the Sunset Memorial Chapel, 7601 Fleur Dr. in Des Moines. He will be inurned at the Sunset Memorial Gardens with Military Honors following the celebration of life.


Edward James Walters was born January 15, 1947, in Fort Dodge Iowa to Orville and Catherine Walters. He graduated from Fort Dodge high school, then served in the US Navy from 1967 to 1969. On February 26, 1976, he married Patricia Hayes. He worked as a laborer for local 177 until he retired in 2000. He was very active in Laborers Local 177 and the Special Olympics. Ed and Pat volunteered for the Special Olympics for 24 years. He enjoyed driving and talking to people. Everyone knew him as “Big Ed”. He knew someone everywhere he went. His family was the most important thing in his life.


He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia of 48 years, a daughter, Jennifer Hayes (Willy Schwartzman), son Andy Walters, and adopted daughter Stormy Wright.

Grandchildren: Ashley Hayes (Mark Vitale), Dustin Nail, Brandy Graham (Mark Rogers), Michael Graham (Ashley), Kelsey Coles (Michael), Josh Harris (Sarah), and Reggie Hayes, great grandchildren, Caden, Reilynn, Owen, Daisy, Steven, Phoenix, Ashton, Liam, Stella, Carter, Adriana, Evelyn, Luke, Sophia, and Charlie, three brothers, Bob, Matt, and Michael Walters, and many beloved, nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Catherine, brothers, Wally and Gary and sister Gladys.
