David William Stevens

David William Stevens, 85, passed peacefully on December 13, 2021 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. He was born June 25, 1936 to Clarence and Evelyn Stevens in Des Moines.


David was a loving father and his love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren was endless. David enjoyed his long discussions with friends and family, camping at Cuttys, tinkering with his multitude of projects and watching Iowa Hawkeyes football.


David was owner operator of Stevens Plastering and joined the Des Moines Fire Department in 1966 where he remained until he retired as a Lieutenant in 1994. Shortly after David and Sheila, his loving wife of 62 years, became "Snowbirds" and relocated to Naples, FL in the winter months where they enjoyed the warm weather and beaches for many wonderful years.


David was also a member of the South Gate Masonic Lodge, Des Moines Valley of the Scottish Rite for 54 years.


Left to cherish David's memory include his children: William (Terri) Stevens, Michelle (David) Lewis; grandchildren: Joshua (Arrie) Stevens, Sarah (Sean) Adams, Nicholas (Robin) Stevens, Jennifer Stevens, Shannon (Ben) Gunty, and Shawna Lewis; eight great-grandchildren, with number nine on the way; and sister Karla (Dan) Mitchell.


He was preceded in death by his wife Sheila Stevens and his parents, Clarence and Evelyn Stevens.


Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on December 29, 2021 at Sunset Memorial Chapel: 7601 Fleur Dr., Des Moines. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service, also at the chapel.


David’s family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Iowa Methodist Hospital and Bickford of Urbandale for the very dignified and compassionate care he received.


Memorial contributions may be made to The Animal Rescue League of Iowa in loving memory of David.
