Daniel Miller

Daniel “Dan” Miller, 95, passed away on December 16, 2022. Due to unsafe weather and travel conditions forecasted for Thursday, December 22, Dan's services have been rescheduled. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 27, from 10 to 11:00 AM at Sunset Memorial Chapel in Des Moines, IA. A service will be held afterward at 11:00 AM. Burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens after the service. Daniel’s family invites attendees to join them for a luncheon after the burial.


Dan was born on December 21, 1926, to Raymond and Mamie (Elmore) Miller in Princeton, MO and grew up in northern Missouri, including Saline, Cainsville, and Maryville. His family later moved to Jefferson City, MO, and later Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO, where he met his wife of 71 years, Jane. Dan was a WWII Navy veteran and served on Truk Island from May 1946 to May 1947, and then on USS Hollister from July 24, 1947, to October 1, 1947. After a long career in the Des Moines Public School system, Dan retired as an elementary school teacher. He was a member of New Heights Church. He will be remembered for his strong faith, and being a wonderful dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather.


Dan is preceded in death by his parents; twin sister, Florence; and sister, Eleanor.


Dan is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Jane” Miller; children, Paul (Sandy) Miller, Mike (Julie) Miller, and Teresa (Gary) McDonough; grandchildren, Meghan, Brian, Ben, and Luke; and great-grandchildren, Lydia, Sylvia, and Bridget.
